PULLEYS

Tools for access and rigging

Pulleys are used to haul up equipment or raise a person in a rescue situation. Some pulleys have an integrated rope clamp to make certain tasks easier. Specialized pulleys also allow for movement along a rope or cable: for moving loads or evacuating a person.

Pulleys are divided into five families:

  • Progress capture pulleys have an integrated progress capture device so a hauling system can be quickly installed,
  • Single pulleys can be used in all systems,
  • Prusik pulleys are designed for use with a self-jamming Prusik hitch to build a lightweight progress capture system,
  • Transport pulleys are designed for Tyrolean traverses with rope or cable,
  • Specialized pulleys are designated to certain specific applications (moving along mechanical lift cables, passing knots, etc.)

Two factors determine a pulley’s efficiency:

  • Sheave size: the larger the sheave diameter, the higher the efficiency,
  • Bushings and bearings: self-lubricating bushings are efficient, but they must be regularly maintained. Ball bearings are very efficient. Since they are sealed, they do not require any maintenance.

The design of the pulley determines how the pulley is attached to the rope:

  • Pulleys with fixed side plates must be used with symmetrically shaped carabiners. They are quick and easy to install.
  • Pulleys with swinging side plates must be opened to load the rope. They work with all carabiner types.

BELAY DEVICE AND DESCENDERS

Fernand Petzl started building innovative descenders like the SIMPLE in the late 1960s. From those beginnings, Petzl has been continuously developing innovative caving and climbing descenders and belay devices.

Introduced in 1992, the GRIGRI, is the perfect example of the way Petzl has changed the way people climb, or at least the way they belay. It has allowed climbers to push the limits of sport climbing, while keeping their partners happy. Ergonomic, durable and easy to use, the GRIGRI is now standard equipment for most sport climbers in the world.

Besides the GRIGRI, Petzl offers a large selection of devices for a variety of vertical uses: from the PIRANA for canyoning to the SCORPIO VERTIGO for via ferrata routes. The ever popular REVERSO3 is now available in a lighter and more compact version, the VERSO.

VERSO Petzl's lightest belay/rappel device with Adaptive Rope Control technology (belay devices)

The VERSO is a simplified version of the REVERSO³ offering a lighter and more compact option for climbers looking to further reduce the weight/size of their rack of gear. The asymmetrical V-shaped grooved friction channels adapt the friction for better control using our ARC (Adaptive Rope Control) technology.
  • Ultra-light design:
    - 31 % lighter than the Reverso³
    - hot-forged aluminum
    - Weight: 57 g
  • Single device for all ropes:
    - single ropes ≥ 8.9 mm
    - half ropes ≥ 8 mm
    - twin ropes ≥ 7.5 mm
  • ARC technology adapts to the diameter of rope used by increasing or decreasing the braking friction on the rope according to its diameter and conditions
  • Increased friction on thinner ropes
  • Adapted friction for efficiency with larger diameter ropes
  • Asymmetrical grooved sidewalls decrease friction when taking in slack for greater ease of use
  • Super compact design is easy to use and doesn't take up much space on your rack
  • Rope friendly design separates the two strands of rope when belaying with half/twin ropes or while rappelling thus helping to prevents kinks
  • Stiff keeper cable will not get sucked into the device, helps maintain the optimal position during use, and aids in preventing loss during transitions

GRIGRI Self-braking (belay device)

The GRIGRI's self-braking function helps the belayer catch and hold a climber, making it great for working routes. Works equally well for lead climbing and top roping. Ergonomic design makes for smooth, controllable lowers. Also great for rappelling on single ropes - perfect for setting and cleaning routes.
  • Self-braking system: if the rope suddenly comes under tension (e.g. in a fall), the cam pivots to pinch the rope, thus helping the belayer stop the climber's fall
  • Usage is similar to that of conventional belay devices:
    - paying out rope is done using both hands
    - arresting a fall is done by holding the free end of the rope
    - for lowering and rappelling, the rate of descent is controlled by the hand holding the free end of the rope (the rope is released with the handle).

ASCENDERS

Ascenders were originally designed for ascending fixed ropes. They can also be used to address a wide range of secondary needs: helping the second climber, hauling a victim out of a crevasse or up a wall, etc.

All ascenders are designed to grip the rope tenaciously under the worst conditions. The self-cleaning cam is designed to provide grip even on mud and ice encrusted ropes. The cam features thin teeth that pass between the fibers of the sheath without causing damage. The fine teeth allow for better grip on icy and muddy ropes. The downward angled teeth reduce the friction between the cam and rope for a smoother glide while diminishing the wear on ropes. Most models can be rapidly installed and removed with one hand, so passing intermediate anchors is a quick and easy process. We make a complete range of ascenders to handle every situation.

Recent improvements inlcude:
- the ASCENSION’s handle is now more comfortable
- the cam has been refined to increase the efficiency in which the ascender glides on the rope
- increase the durability of these devices

The ASCENSION is the standard choice for mountaineering, big wall and ice climbing.
The tiny TIBLOC should always be carried “just in case” of an unexpected ascent or rescue.
